Portugal sees temperature drop and gusty winds as June front moves inland

Meteorologists at Portugal's Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) warned that a weak frontal system will sweep across the mainland starting Wednesday. Temperatures are expected to fall by 3 to 7 °C, with daytime highs ranging from 22 °C to 26 °C in most areas, while some spots in the Alentejo, Vale do Tejo and Vale do Douro may still reach 30 °C. Minimum temperatures could dip to 8 °C–10 °C in higher inland zones.

Strong winds are forecast, especially along the western coast, in upland regions and the leeward side of the Algarve, with gusts up to 70 km/h. The front will also bring increased cloud cover and scattered rain, raising the perceived coldness. IPMA meteorologist Maria João Frada attributed the pattern to the position of the Azores anticyclone and Atlantic depressions influencing the jet stream.

The weather changes are described as typical for June, though the temporary dip in maximum temperatures may fall below the seasonal average.
