Montenegro pledges no Social Security reforms during current legislature
Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro has reiterated his commitment to not implement structural reforms to the Social Security system during the current legislature. Speaking at the PSD Summer University, Montenegro stated that pensions are ‘sacred’ and expressed a desire for a ‘national understanding’ regarding the system's sustainability before future elections.
This stance follows the release of a report on the sustainability of the pension system, which has sparked intense political debate. The Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) has criticized the government's position, with Secretary-General Paulo Raimundo dismissing the government's promises as worthless and accusing the administration of using the study as a maneuver to justify future cuts.
Critics and analysts have noted the complexity of the debate, particularly regarding the methodology of recent studies that combine the accounts of Social Security with the Caixa Geral de Aposentações (CGA). While some warn of future deficits, others point to recent surpluses and argue that the debate should focus on transparency and long-term financing rather than immediate structural changes.
