Portugal to increase elderly solidarity supplement and provide December pension bonus
The Portuguese government has announced an increase in the Solidarity Supplement for the Elderly (CSI). Starting January 1, 2027, the monthly reference amount will rise from €670 to €720, a 7.5 percent increase. This measure, announced by Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, is part of a broader plan to gradually raise the reference benefit to €870 by 2029.
The CSI is intended for low-income elderly citizens who have reached the official retirement age and have resided in Portugal for at least six consecutive years. The supplement functions as a top-up to ensure beneficiaries reach the €720 threshold based on their actual income. Recipients will see these updates applied automatically by Social Security.
In addition to these long-term changes, pensioners in Portugal will also receive a one-time extraordinary supplement this December. Depending on the total value of their pension, eligible retirees receiving up to €1,611.39 will receive a single payment of either €100, €150, or €200. This December payment is also automatic and does not affect the permanent monthly pension amount.
