Portugal to invest 3.8 million euros in protected areas

The Portuguese government has announced an investment of 3.8 million euros over the current and upcoming year to support the co-management of protected areas. The funding aims to optimize previously approved plans through various initiatives, including ecological restoration, nature tourism projects, and the promotion of local products and cultural traditions.

According to the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MAEN), the investment also includes a component for technical capacity building. This will strengthen Co-management Commissions by increasing technical teams dedicated to project implementation, participatory management, and the revitalization of protected zones. Minister Maria da Graça Carvalho stated that the government is committed to creating the necessary instruments to protect and value the country’s natural heritage while reducing natural risks.
