Portuguese environmental and forest management investments
Overview
The Portuguese government has initiated several environmental and natural resource management investments.
One major initiative involves an 80 million euro investment through the Mechanization Program for Fuel Management, funded by the Recovery and Resilience Plan. This program aims to acquire over 3,000 pieces of equipment, such as tractors and all-terrain vehicles, to assist municipalities and forest producers in fire prevention and forest defense. Minister of Agriculture and Sea José Manuel Fernandes noted that the current fire season has seen a “75% reduction in hectares burned compared to 2025.”
Additionally, the government announced a 3.8 million euro investment to support the co-management of protected areas. This funding is intended for ecological restoration, nature tourism, and the promotion of local traditions. The Ministry of Environment and Energy also plans to use these funds for technical capacity building to strengthen Co-management Commissions and revitalize protected zones.
