Portugal to receive 261.5 million euros for storm recovery
The European Parliament's Budget Committee has approved 261.5 million euros to assist Portugal in recovering from severe weather events that occurred between January and February. This funding is part of a larger 489 million euro package intended to help four EU Member States manage the consequences of extreme weather, which also includes 149.1 million euros for Spain, 74.9 million euros for Italy, and 3.7 million euros for Malta.
The funds will be mobilized through the European Union Solidarity Fund to finance emergency and recovery measures. These include restoring energy, water, wastewater, telecommunications, and transport infrastructure, as well as supporting health and education services. The aid also covers cleaning operations, temporary accommodation, rescue services, and the protection of cultural heritage.
In Portugal, the storms caused significant damage, including 19 deaths and losses estimated to exceed five billion euros. MEP Hélder Sousa Silva noted that Portugal has already received an advance of approximately 65.37 million euros, roughly 25% of the total approved amount. The support still awaits final approval from the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament plenary session.
