Portugal under very high UV radiation alert through Monday

The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has placed the entire mainland, as well as the Madeira and Azores archipelagos, under a very‑high ultraviolet (UV) radiation risk level that is expected to continue at least until Monday. This level is the second‑most severe on the UV scale and coincides with an ongoing heatwave, with maximum daytime temperatures forecast between 30 °C and 37 °C across most of the country and reaching 38 °C‑40 °C in parts of the Alentejo, Ribatejo and Douro Valley.

Health authorities advise the public to take reinforced sun‑protection measures: wear UV‑filter sunglasses, hats and appropriate clothing, use sunscreen, seek shade especially between 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., and limit exposure for children and the elderly. The alert also reminds that excessive UV exposure can cause sunburn, accelerate skin ageing and increase the risk of skin diseases.
