Portugal water supply interrupted in Lisbon and Viseu after pipe break and wildfire

A small‑diameter water conduit on Avenida Fontes Pereira de Melo near the Marquês de Pombal roundabout in central Lisbon ruptured on 10 July 2026. The Portuguese Water Company (EPAL) suspended the local supply and dispatched repair crews. Officials said the outage should have limited impact and be resolved quickly.

A forest fire that began on 2 July in the Vouzela area spread to the Caramulo mountains, destroying roughly 15,000 ha of forest and burning about 80 ha of pasture. The flames melted water tubes serving seven villages of São João do Monte, leaving around 50 residents (doubling on weekends) without water and sanitation. The municipal council of Tondela began delivering potable water to households. The fire caused two serious and six minor injuries and involved more than 1,200 firefighters.
