Portugal faces heatwave risk and high wildfire danger
Portugal is facing a significant rise in temperatures and an increased risk of wildfires. The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has warned of a potential heatwave, with maximum temperatures expected to reach 38 degrees Celsius in the Alentejo and Tagus Valley regions. This warming trend is driven by a hot, dry air mass over the Iberian Peninsula. Additionally, tropical nights, where minimum temperatures remain above 20 degrees Celsius, are anticipated in parts of the Alto Alentejo, Beira Baixa, and the Tagus Valley.
The National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC) has issued warnings regarding high rural fire danger. Currently, 20 municipalities across seven districts are under maximum fire risk. In response to the worsening conditions, the Municipality of Santarém has prohibited all burning and agricultural fires until September 23, 2026, and has implemented strict restrictions on the use of motorized machinery during periods of high danger.
In a recent incident in Sintra, a wildfire required the deployment of over 150 firefighters and resulted in four minor injuries. While no homes were immediately threatened, the blaze highlighted the ongoing challenges of managing vegetation near residential areas during dry periods.
