Overview

The Portuguese government has recognized rural fires in Vouzela and Valpaços as a natural catastrophe, allocating ten million euros to assist farmers in restoring chestnut, olive, and vineyard crops. This follows intense wildfires in Trás-os-Montes and Boticas that destroyed significant agricultural assets. Emergency response efforts have remained intensive. In Proença-a-Nova, authorities reported that approximately 70% to 80% of the perimeters in Alvito da Beira, Sobreira Formosa, and Atalaia have been contained, though hot spots persist. In Mirandela, a fire in Cedães mobilized over 120 personnel, with combat efforts complicated by steep terrain and wind. A separate wildfire in the Agualva and Mira-Sintra area of Sintra resulted in four minor injuries, including two firefighters, on September 12. Over 150 firefighters were deployed to protect the urban perimeter from the blaze, which ignited near residential areas. Weather conditions continue to exacerbate the risk. The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has warned of a potential heatwave, with temperatures expected to reach 38°C in the Alentejo and Tagus Valley. The region may also experience “tropical nights,” where minimum temperatures stay above 20°C in parts of Alto Alentejo, Beira Baixa, and the Tagus Valley. The National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC) has placed 20 municipalities across seven districts under maximum fire risk. In response, the Municipality of Santarém has prohibited all burning and agricultural fires until September 23, 2026, and has implemented strict restrictions on the use of motorized machinery during high-danger periods. On September 19, two major wildfires broke out in the Coimbra district, specifically in the municipalities of Vila Nova de Poiares and Arganil. In Vila Nova de Poiares, the fire in the parish of Lavegadas has placed the village of Sabouga at high risk, prompting the deployment of 261 personnel and 73 vehicles.
