Portugal declares Vouzela and Valpaços fires a natural catastrophe
The Portuguese government has officially recognized the rural fires in Vouzela and Valpaços as a natural catastrophe. To support affected agricultural holdings, the government has allocated 10 million euros in non-reimbursable subsidies. These funds aim to restore productive capacity for crops such as chestnut, olive, and vine, with eligible investments reaching up to 400,000 euros per holding.
In a separate assessment, the National Institute of Statistics (INE) reported that Covilhã was the municipality with the largest burned area in Portugal between 2020 and 2025, totaling 28,800 hectares. Data shows that the North and Central regions concentrated 90.7% of the total burned area during this five-year period.
Additionally, the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC) is conducting a debriefing to evaluate the operational response to the recent fires in Carrazeda de Ansiães. This follows local protests regarding the effectiveness of the fire suppression efforts. Meanwhile, in Brazil, the state of Pará has established an environmental alert to prepare for potential droughts and wildfires driven by the El Niño phenomenon.
