Portugal's Algarve Sunshade Zones Mapped After Ministerial Push

Portugal's environmental minister Maria da Graça Carvalho has proposed installing maps at the entrances of Algarve and Alentejo beaches to show where tourists may set up their own sunshades. The maps aim to clarify a long‑standing dispute between beachgoers and concessionaires who lease sections of the coastline.

Current signage only distinguishes a concession zone from a free‑shade zone, leaving many unsure where personal umbrellas are permitted. Carvalho notes the proposal is a recommendation, not a binding rule, and that local mayors can adjust the boundaries. Concession areas are limited to no more than 30% of a beach and 50% of its front, but ambiguities remain. The minister cited comments from the head of the environmental agency APA, José Pimenta Machado, who called prohibiting personal umbrellas "missuse" ("Missbrauch").

The plan is intended to reduce misunderstandings and allow both tourists and businesses to coexist with clearer guidance.
