Portugal's AMCAL launches 2.3‑billion‑euro Strategy Terra+ waste management plan

AMCAL, the waste‑management authority for the Alentejo municipalities of Alvito, Cuba, Portel, Viana do Alentejo and Vidigueira, unveiled Strategy Terra+. The programme targets €2.3 billion of investment by 2030 to expand waste prevention, recycling and resource recovery, largely by curbing landfill disposal.

The plan allocates €1.1 billion to develop organic‑waste sorting and valorisation facilities and €1.2 billion to boost selective‑collection projects, including door‑to‑door collection and municipal ecocentres. It also envisages increased mechanical and biological treatment, limited incineration where needed, and a broader circular‑economy approach. Expected outcomes include reduced use of the Vila Ruiva sanitary landfill and strengthened operations at the regional organic‑bioresidue valuation centre.
