Iberian municipal waste management

In July 2026 the Alentejo region of Portugal announced a €2.3 billion “Strategy Terra+” plan to expand waste prevention, recycling and resource recovery by 2030. The programme earmarks €1.1 billion for organic‑waste sorting and valorisation facilities and €1.2 billion for selective‑collection projects such as door‑to‑door collection and municipal ecocentres, aiming to cut reliance on the Vila Ruiva landfill and strengthen circular‑economy operations.

Later that month, the Spanish city of Málaga and its waste operator LIMASAM began upgrading the Los Ruices environmental centre, adding new organic‑waste treatment capacity and expanding selective‑collection networks. Partnering with waste‑valorisation firm Valoriza, the initiative emphasises source‑separation and energy recovery for non‑recyclable fractions, echoing EU waste‑management directives and the broader Iberian trend toward landfill reduction and circular‑economy growth.
