Portugal's forest operators face multi‑year cleanup after Storm Kristin

The violent Storm Kristin caused extensive damage to forests in Portugal's central region, including Leiria, Pombal and Ansião. Residents and local officials report fallen trees, damaged roofs and heightened fire risk, prompting urgent calls for cleanup before the summer.

Forestry companies, represented by Association president Pedro Serra Ramos, say the nationwide deadline of 30 June to clear debris is unrealistic. The process of removing, sorting and preparing the timber for industry use is technically difficult and slowed by an already saturated market. Ramos warned that “the operation is heavy, slow, and technically difficult” and expects the material to remain on the ground for up to two years.

Companies are already working at full capacity, even suspending contracts in other regions to redirect resources. Until the wood is cleared and properly processed, the excess fuel on the forest floor could exacerbate future wildfire danger.
