Portugal's GNR conducts nationwide crackdown, arresting 692 and seizing drugs and weapons

From 12 to 18 June 2026 the Portuguese National Republican Guard (GNR) carried out extensive operations across the country aimed at preventing crime, enforcing road safety and tackling illegal activities. The provisional figures show 692 people detained, including 318 for driving under the influence of alcohol and 138 for driving without a licence. Other arrests involved 53 suspected drug traffickers, 16 domestic‑violence cases, 15 theft or robbery suspects, 11 illegal‑weapon holders and five individuals linked to forest‑fire suspicions.

The operations also yielded large seizures: more than 6,900 doses of hashish, about 960 doses of cocaine, over 427 doses of MDMA and additional heroin, liamba and ten cannabis plants. Forces confiscated 63 firearms, 27 prohibited weapons, 4,418 rounds of ammunition, 38 vehicles, three boats, 1,212 counterfeit items and cash exceeding €317,000. Road checks recorded 7,155 infractions, the most common being missing mandatory inspections (1,111 cases), followed by speeding (918) and alcohol‑related offences (694). Other violations involved tachograph irregularities, lighting and signalling problems, lack of insurance, seat‑belt misuse and illegal mobile‑phone use while driving.
