Portugal's GNR detains 741 people and logs 7,511 traffic violations in a week

The Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR) carried out nationwide operations from 29 May to 4 June, detaining 741 individuals. The largest groups were 294 for driving under the influence of alcohol, 139 for driving without a licence and 54 for drug trafficking. Smaller numbers were arrested for theft, illegal weapons possession, domestic violence and a forest fire.

During the same period the GNR recorded 7,511 traffic infractions, led by 2,303 cases of speeding. Other frequent violations included 1,046 for missing mandatory vehicle inspections, 471 for excessive blood‑alcohol levels, 392 tacograph breaches, and numerous offences related to lighting, insurance, mobile‑phone use and seat‑belt compliance. The police also seized more than 1,650 doses of hashish, 287 doses of cocaine, 261 doses of MDMA, nearly 100 doses of liamba, 17 doses of heroin, 327 rounds of ammunition, 22 vehicles, 15 firearms and €5,800 in cash.
