Portugal's GNR urges defensive driving while officials address crosswalk safety

The Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR) teamed up with the Cap Magellan association at the Vilar Formoso border to welcome returning emigrants. The operation, attended by Secretary of State for Portuguese Communities Emídio Sousa, included advice for drivers to adopt defensive driving, plan trips, rest when needed and avoid littering to reduce forest‑fire risk. Vehicles crossing the border received safety pamphlets and a welcome message.

In Oliveira de Azeméis, elevated crosswalks on the city's southern access have sparked complaints from motorists who say the sudden rise in the road, especially at night and with inadequate signage, surprises drivers and undermines safety. Local officials stress the need for clearer markings and night‑time visibility to protect pedestrians while ensuring drivers can anticipate the change in road surface.
