Portugal road safety initiatives

Overview

In late July 2026 Portugal’s National Road Safety Authority launched the summer‑long “No excuses” campaign, warning drivers against fatigue, speeding, alcohol and mobile‑phone use through TV, radio, digital platforms and roadside advertising. The effort was bolstered by 311 partners and complemented by toll‑operator Ascendi’s third “Learn from those who know” campaign, which targets experienced drivers with billboards and is supported by the GNR and police.

A few days later, the GNR extended the safety push to the Vilar Formoso border, where it handed out defensive‑driving advice and safety pamphlets to returning emigrants. At the same time, local officials in Oliveira de Azeméis highlighted problems with newly built elevated crosswalks, calling for clearer markings and night‑time visibility to protect pedestrians while helping drivers anticipate the change in road surface.
