Portugal's health service struggles with interior doctor shortages and immigration pressure

The National Association of Medical Students (ANEM) says that young doctors are reluctant to work in Portugal's interior regions, citing demographic trends and the areas' lower attractiveness. ANEM president Maria Fontão told Rádio Portalegre, “É difícil identificar os motivos que levam ao afastamento dos médicos do interior” and highlighted that demographic factors weigh on the decision of recent interns.

Health officials also note that a sharp rise in immigration is adding further strain to the Serviço Nacional de Saúde (SNS). Xavier Barreto told Lusa that “É muito difícil imputar a responsabilidade da situação em que estamos a um único fator”, pointing to the influx of 1.6 million foreign residents, which lifted Portugal's total population to 11.424 million. The surge has prompted calls to improve infrastructure, retain more physicians, and reorganize care roles, such as giving nurses greater responsibility for chronic patients and expanding pharmacy-based services.
