Portugal's Left Bloc urges government to fix flood aid gaps in Montemor

Portugal's Left Bloc (Bloco de Esquerda) has pressed the government to ensure that all victims of the January‑February floods in Montemor‑o‑Velho receive appropriate compensation. Deputy Fabian Figueiredo warned that farmers, families and small landowners may have been excluded from national and EU aid because they were forced to report losses while many fields and homes remained submerged, making accurate damage assessment difficult. The party argues this could lead to under‑valuation of harm and denial of entitled support.

The European Commission responded, stating that it is Portugal’s responsibility to conduct a correct evaluation and that the country may reopen or extend reporting deadlines and amend its request to the EU Solidarity Fund to include newly identified damages. The Left Bloc claims the government has the necessary tools to correct any initial assessment errors and ensure no affected person is left without aid.
