Portugal's New 7 Wonders Contest Features Alentejo, Ribatejo Heritage
The municipal council of Reguengos de Monsaraz approved a €229,469 urban renewal contract for Rua Carvalho Araújo, the third phase of the town’s pedestrian‑street modernization programme. The work, funded by the Alentejo 2030 regional program, will begin in August and aims to make the previously near‑impassable street safer and more accessible for residents and visitors.
At the same time, the nationwide “New 7 Wonders of Portugal” competition has moved to its regional final for Alentejo and Ribatejo. Fourteen finalists across seven categories – including the castles of Marvão and Monsaraz, the Aqueduct of Amoreira and Alqueva Dam, historic religious cathedrals, 20th‑century cultural venues, contemporary architectural projects, and tourism attractions – were presented at a semi‑final in Marvão. Public voting will decide which sites may join the national list, marking the 20‑year anniversary of the initiative and highlighting the region’s cultural and historical wealth.
