Portugal's Parliament Approves New Dental Doctor Career in National Health Service

The Portuguese Parliament voted unanimously to create a special career for dental doctors within the Serviço Nacional de Saúde (SNS). The new framework will integrate dentists into local health units and establishes three professional categories—assistant, assessor and senior assessor—with defined responsibilities and progression pathways.

The Ordem dos Médicos Dentistas (OMD) hailed the measure as a historic step, emphasizing that it recognises the technical‑scientific autonomy of dental doctors and preserves the seniority, remuneration and rights of those already working in the public system. OMD chief Miguel Pavão said the true success will depend on placing more dentists across the country and strengthening public oral‑health services, and pledged the association will monitor implementation.
