Portugal's Programa Volta faces consumer demand for more return points
A recent ConsumerChoice survey shows that Portuguese consumers are highly supportive of recycling and the Programa Volta deposit‑return scheme. Ninety‑four percent of respondents are aware of the programme, 80 % consider it an important measure for Portugal, 79 % say recycling beverage packaging is very important, and 85 % recycle frequently.
Nevertheless, 66 % of those surveyed call for more return‑point locations, a simpler process and a higher deposit value. Forty‑one percent use the system regularly, 23 % occasionally, and overall 64 % have tried it. Seventeen percent have not yet had the opportunity, while 12 % intend to join. About half of respondents say they would use the programme more often if the deposit exceeded the current 10 cents.
