Portugal's Setúbal and Beja Polytechnics Upgrade to Universities

The Instituto Politécnico de Setúbal (IPS) and the Instituto Politécnico de Beja (IPBeja) will officially become universities polytechnic on 1 August under Portugal's new legal framework for higher‑education institutions (RJIES). The change follows Law n.º 32/2026, which automatically converts publicly accredited polytechnics into university polytechnics. President Angela Lemos of IPS said the new status will strengthen research, innovation and regional development, while IPBeja president Aldo Passarinho highlighted the continuity of applied‑knowledge teaching and commitment to the Alentejo region.

The transition does not alter existing programmes, diplomas, contracts or tuition. Academic and administrative activities will continue unchanged while the institutions adapt to the new legal regime over the coming months.
