Overview

In early July 2026 a wave of reforms reshaped Portugal’s higher‑education landscape. The Instituto Politécnico de Beja appointed new directors and opened a renovated residence; the Instituto Politécnico de Tomar launched a talent competition and Erasmus programme; the government created the University of Leiria and West (ULO) on 9 July, converting the Instituto Politécnico de Leiria and adding new programmes. Student‑housing projects continued with the VILA residence in Vila Nova de Famalicão and the trial opening of Residence Europa at IP Beja. On 19 July IP Beja opened applications for fifteen Technical Higher Professional Courses for 2026‑27, aimed at regional labour‑market needs. Later that month IP Viana do Castelo confirmed its automatic conversion into Portugal’s first polytechnic university in August. On 24 July the Agência de Avaliação e Acreditação do Ensino Superior granted IP Tomar a six‑year accreditation and renamed it Universidade Politécnica de Tomar effective 1 August, highlighting a requirement for a higher share of doctoral‑qualified staff. The newly created Universidade de Leiria e Oeste set a transformation agenda toward full operational capacity by 2030 and, together with the Ministry of Justice, presented the “Inclusion through Science” project for eligible young prisoners. On 27 July the Education Minister inaugurated Building 2 of the University of Coimbra’s Figueira da Foz campus, adding maritime biology and naval‑engineering labs and new degrees. The same day the Instituto Politécnico de Coimbra announced it will be renamed Universidade Politécnica de Coimbra in August, together with an addition of 500 student‑housing beds, raising total capacity to 860. The Instituto Politécnico de Portalegre will likewise become Universidade Politécnica de Portalegre on 1 August and has joined the EU4Dual consortium.
