Portugal's Storm Kristin Relief Funds Support Over 200,000 Homes

The severe storm Kristin that struck central Portugal on 28 January damaged more than 200,000 dwellings across 171 municipalities. The Emergency Social Fund, managed by Cáritas Diocesana de Leiria‑Fátima, has approved €505,988.86 in direct assistance, benefiting 122 families and allocating 93.2% of its €2.49 million budget to housing reconstruction. The fund raised its maximum support per household to €30,000 to improve the impact of aid.

The regional Reconstruction Mission reports that 19,477 applications for public rebuilding aid have been approved out of 35,908 submitted, with over 6,000 still pending. Public assistance totals €83.5 million, part of an estimated €105‑110 million reconstruction cost, while insurers have processed 179,046 claims, paying €537.2 million for 145,000 incidents. A shortage of skilled construction workers is slowing work, and some homes still await restoration of fixed‑line communications. The government has pledged to disburse aid within three to fifteen business days depending on the amount claimed.
