Portuguese athletes honored for European championship achievements
Several Portuguese athletes have received municipal recognition following significant achievements in European competitions.
In Lousã, the City Council honored swimmers Camila Rebelo, Guilherme Costa, and Francisco Caetano. Rebelo secured a silver medal in the 200m backstroke at the 2026 European Aquatics Championships in Paris, setting a new national record with a time of 2:07.62. In rugby, Costa and Caetano were part of the team that won the European University Rugby Sevens Championship in Salerno, Italy, defeating a French side 12-5 in the final. Costa was also named Player of the Tournament.
In Ourém, the municipality issued a vote of recognition for race walker Joana Pontes. Competing at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, United Kingdom, Pontes finished 10th in the race walk marathon and established a new Portuguese national record with a time of 3:41:36.
