Portuguese athletic achievements at European championships

Portuguese athletes participated in various European championships during August 2026, achieving several national records.

At the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, José Carlos Pinto prepared for his outdoor debut in the 5,000 metres, noting that competing against stars like Jakob Ingebrigtsen provided “extra incentive”. In the sprinting events, Tatjana Pinto advanced to the 100-metre semifinals following a recent national record.

Following these competitions, several athletes received municipal honors in Portugal. Joana Pontes was recognized in Ourém after finishing 10th in the race walk marathon at the Birmingham championships, where she set a new Portuguese national record of 3:41:36. Additionally, in Lousã, swimmers Camila Rebelo, Guilherme Costa, and Francisco Caetano were honored; Rebelo set a national record in the 200m backstroke at the European Aquatics Championships in Paris. Rugby players Costa and Caetano were also recognized for their roles in winning the European University Rugby Sevens Championship.
