Portuguese authorities arrest individuals for environmental crimes
The Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR) has conducted two separate operations in Portugal targeting illegal environmental activities.
In Sines, two men, aged 22 and 34, were caught in the act of stealing approximately 280 kilograms of stone pine cones (pinus pinea). The suspects were intercepted following an anonymous report while in possession of seven bags of cones. Authorities noted that the harvesting of stone pine cones is prohibited between April 1 and December 1 to protect the species' growth and seed maturity.
In Valongo, a 73-year-old man was detained in Ermesinde for the illegal capture of protected bird species. During a patrol by the Nature and Environment Protection Service (SEPNA), officers discovered traps, decoys, and adhesive substances used for capturing wildlife. A subsequent search of the suspect's residence led to the seizure of various tools, including metal rods, traps, and specialized cages. The individual has been formally charged, and the case has been referred to the Valongo Judicial Court. Under Portuguese law, the unauthorized capture or destruction of protected species can result in prison sentences of up to five years.
