Environmental enforcement in Brazil and Portugal

Overview

Authorities in Brazil and Portugal have conducted several operations to combat illegal environmental activities.

In Brazil, the São Bernardo Municipal Civil Guard targeted illegal fishing at the Billings Reservoir. These inspections resulted in the seizure of two boats, 560 meters of fishing nets, and 160 kilograms of fish, with fines totaling more than R$ 34,000.

In Portugal, the National Republican Guard (GNR) has addressed multiple violations. In Sines, two men were caught harvesting approximately 280 kilograms of stone pine cones, an activity prohibited between April 1 and December 1. Additionally, in Valongo, a 73-year-old man was detained for the illegal capture of protected bird species. Officers seized various traps, decoys, and specialized cages during the operation, and the case has been referred to the Valongo Judicial Court.
