Portuguese Firefighters Battle Massive Wildfires in Ávila, Spain

A joint Portuguese operational force (FOCON) of about 130 personnel was deployed to the province of Ávila, Spain, to assist in fighting large wildfires that have already scorched nearly 50,000 hectares. The force, commanded by David Lobato, sub‑regional head of Emergency and Civil Protection for Médio Tejo, includes staff from ANEPC, regional fire brigades and the GNR's emergency unit.

The team arrived late on Saturday, set up a base in the city of Ávila and works around the clock in two‑shift rotations. Lobato said the conditions are difficult: aerial drops are insufficient and water does not reach the ground because of the fire's intensity, so the crews must focus on managing the blaze rather than fully extinguishing it.

Lobato highlighted that the situation is comparable to Portugal’s own recent fire incidents, stressing the need to wait for a window of opportunity when resources can effectively suppress the fire.
