Portuguese firefighters demand structural reform during 150th anniversary
During the 150th anniversary celebrations of the Egitanienses Volunteer Firefighters Association in Guarda, Portuguese officials and firefighter leaders called for structural reforms in the sector.
António Nunes, president of the Liga dos Bombeiros Portugueses (LBP), urged President António José Seguro to use his influence to accelerate public debate regarding a structural reform. Key demands include updating social and professional statutes, improving forest fire methodologies, and valuing volunteerism. Leaders noted that since 1980, over 256 firefighters have died in the line of duty.
State Secretary for Civil Protection Rui Rocha declared firefighters a "national priority" and stated the government aims to finalize the legal framework for the careers of those under contract with humanitarian associations by the end of the year. Rocha also announced the delivery of 22 forest fire vehicles to the Central region, funded by assistance from Timor-Leste.
In Ponta Delgada, João Paulo Medeiros of the AHBVPD also called for more predictable financing and stable public subsidies to address rising operational and human resource costs. Additionally, local leaders in Guarda advocated for better coordination between national and local levels and a stronger emphasis on prevention over reactive combat.
