Portuguese firefighters warn rising fuel costs threaten financial sustainability

The Portuguese League of Firefighters (LBP) and the Lisbon District Firefighters Federation (FBDL) have warned that rising fuel prices are “strangling” the financial sustainability of humanitarian fire associations. LBP President António Nunes reported that fuel expenses have increased by approximately 40%, creating significant treasury problems for some associations, particularly regarding non-urgent patient transport.

The FBDL described the situation as “unsustainable and unacceptable,” noting that current state funding mechanisms do not keep pace with the rising costs of essential operations. Beyond fuel, associations are struggling with costs for energy, vehicle maintenance, equipment, and insurance. The federations are calling for urgent government intervention and a revision of the funding model to reflect real operational costs.

The LBP has specifically requested that the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC) immediately process fuel cost reimbursements for June, July, and August to alleviate the immediate financial strain.
