Portugal football arbitration scandal triggers resignations

Technical director of Portugal’s national arbitration, Duarte Gomes, resigned after a dispute with Luciano Gonçalves, president of the Federation’s Arbitration Council, over alleged interference in referee appointments. Gonçalves issued a statement denying any influence, asserting he has never disclosed referee identities before official communication and has never attempted to sway referees. He requested a formal investigation by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) and expressed confidence that the truth will be fully uncovered.

Liga Portugal president Reinaldo Teixeira said the league is awaiting clarification from the FPF and expects a calm season. Sporting Club president Frederico Varandas demanded that Gomes produce evidence for his accusations, citing past scandals such as “Apito Dourado” and urging an independent, influence‑free arbitration system. The matter has been referred to the public prosecutor under the sports‑integrity legal framework.
