Portugal referee boycott threatens Supertaça

Entities: Luciano Gonçalves · Federação Portuguesa de Futebol (FPF) · Primeira Liga · Polícia Judiciária (PJ) · Federação Portuguesa de Futebol

Overview

After veteran referee Duarte Gomes resigned in late June 2026, the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) faced accusations of interference in referee appointments. Arbitration Council president Luciano Gonçalves denied any influence and called for investigations by the Ministry of Public Prosecution and internal bodies. A disciplinary inquiry was archived on 24 July, finding insufficient evidence that Gonçalves leaked information, and the case was referred to the public prosecutor. João Ferreira succeeded Gomes as director of national arbitration. The Polícia Judiciária opened a formal probe, confirming a 20‑page dossier of alleged leaks but again finding no proof of wrongdoing. On 29 July an audio recording of FPF president Pedro Proença surfaced, in which he described referees as “weak”. The leak triggered a boycott: on 31 July referees refused to start mandatory training, demanding a public apology from Proença, while the Association of Portuguese Referees (APAF) also sought clarification. Gonçalves met the officials and expressed solidarity, but the training suspension remains, putting the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira – scheduled for 1 August in Coimbra between FC Porto and Torreense – in jeopardy. Organisers say the match could proceed with substitute officials or be postponed, but cancellation is unlikely; André Narciso has been appointed to officiate. Proença condemned the leak as illegal and immoral, reiterated confidence in Portuguese refereeing and refused to apologise, and a meeting between referees and the FPF president is planned for the Saturday morning of the Supertaça to try to resolve the dispute.
