Portuguese Football Federation unveils new Campeonato de Portugal format and pushes a “new culture of victory”

The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) announced a revamped structure for the Campeonato de Portugal beginning in the 2026/27 season. The competition will feature four groups of 14 clubs, with the top two advancing to promotion rounds, positions 3‑10 retaining their place, and a new cross‑series play‑out determining the relegated teams. The season kicks off on 16 August and concludes with the final on 20 June.

At the same time, FPF president Pedro Proença declared a “new culture of victory” in Faro, outlining plans to strengthen Portuguese football ahead of the 2030 World Cup, which Portugal will co‑host with Spain and Morocco. He highlighted decentralisation initiatives, new cooperation protocols with local municipalities, and the appointment of Jorge Jesus as national team coach.

Separately, the senior men’s futsal championship in Vila Real for 2026/27 was set with 15 participating clubs, noting one team’s promotion to the national league and several new entrants from lower divisions.
