Portuguese healthcare units launch community literacy initiatives

Healthcare units in Portugal are implementing initiatives to improve community literacy and specialized care. The Unidade Local de Saúde do Alentejo Central (ULSAC) recently held its first session of the “Capacitar para Comunicar com a População Migrante” cycle. The program aims to train medical and nursing professionals to provide more inclusive and culturally sensitive care to migrant populations, addressing rights, duties, and procedures for those without regularized documentation.

Separately, the Unidade Local de Saúde Lezíria is organizing a “Death Café” session in Santarém on September 18. Managed by the Community Palliative Care Support Team, the initiative provides an informal space for people to discuss death and suffering to reduce social taboos and promote a more compassionate community approach to end-of-life topics.
