Portuguese heritage sites advance to New 7 Wonders semifinals
Several Portuguese heritage sites have advanced to the national semifinals of the ‘New 7 Wonders of Portugal’ competition. The upcoming semifinal is scheduled for September 5 in Sintra, where 49 candidates will compete to determine the 21 finalists for the national final on September 12.
From the Alentejo and Ribatejo regions, the Santarém Cathedral (Religion category), the Santarém Municipal Market (20th Century category), and the Casa Museu dos Patudos in Alpiarça (Tourism category) have secured spots. Other regional representatives include Marvão Castle, the Amoreira Aqueduct in Elvas, the Ruins of São Cucufate in Vila de Frades, and the Tiago Cabaço Winery in Estremoz.
In the Algarve region, the Igreja da Misericórdia de Tavira has also progressed to the semifinals. Built in 1541, the church is noted for its Renaissance architecture and historical significance. Voting for this stage is open via telephone and the TVI application, allowing participation from Portuguese communities living abroad.
