Portuguese municipalities announce higher education scholarships

The municipalities of Faro and Serpa have announced new scholarship programs for higher education students for the 2026/2027 academic year.

In Faro, applications are open until November 20 for residents enrolled in undergraduate or master's programs at public institutions. The program offers up to 20 annual scholarships, distributed in ten monthly installments equivalent to 3/5 of the current Indexante dos Apoios Sociais (IAS). Eligible candidates must have a minimum academic average of 13 and meet specific household income requirements.

In Serpa, the municipal executive has approved an 18,000 euro investment to provide 18 scholarships. This initiative marks the return of municipal student support to the region after several decades. Twelve scholarships of 1,250 euros each are designated for students from low-income families, while six merit-based scholarships of 500 euros each will recognize academic excellence. Applicants must have resided in the municipality for at least three years and be enrolled in recognized public, private, or cooperative institutions.
