Portuguese municipalities announce water and sanitation updates

Municipalities in Portugal are implementing changes to water and sanitation services. In Arcos de Valdevez, the local government has opened a public tender for a sanitation network expansion project in the parishes of Gondoriz, São Cosme, São Damião, Rio de Moinhos, and Sabadim. The project, valued at over 5.5 million euros, is part of a multi-year investment plan scheduled between 2026 and 2029, aiming to reach a coverage rate of at least 50% for households in the municipality.

In Coimbra, the City Council has approved a 4% increase in water tariffs and the fixed component of sanitation services for 2027. The decision, passed via a tie-breaking vote by Mayor Ana Abrunhosa, follows a proposal by Águas de Coimbra to adjust for rising costs in water supply and wastewater treatment provided by Águas do Centro Litoral. While the increase is set for 2027, social tariffs will remain at current levels.
