Portuguese Parliament addresses immunity for deputies Melo and Sousa
The Portuguese Assembly of the Republic has taken steps regarding the parliamentary immunity of two deputies involved in separate legal proceedings.
Chega deputy Filipe Melo has had his immunity lifted following a defamation complaint filed by Jorge Manuel Rodrigues Oliveira. The case, which is being handled by the Judicial Court of the Braga District, stems from statements made during the municipal election campaign in Vila Verde. Melo had previously expressed his agreement to have his immunity lifted to allow him to be formally investigated.
Separately, the Public Ministry has requested the lifting of immunity for JPP deputy Filipe Sousa. The request involves allegations of receiving an undue advantage during his term as Mayor of Santa Cruz. Specifically, prosecutors allege that a car rental company provided a vehicle for 28 days without charging the required 1,618.96 euros due to his political position. Sousa denies the allegations, asserting that he paid the invoice in full.
Miguel Albuquerque, the President of the Regional Government, has publicly defended Sousa, describing him as an honest man and dismissing the allegations as baseless.
