Portuguese parliamentary immunity proceedings
Overview
The Portuguese Assembly of the Republic has addressed the parliamentary immunity of two deputies involved in legal matters.
Chega deputy Filipe Melo had his immunity lifted following a defamation complaint filed by Jorge Manuel Rodrigues Oliveira regarding statements made during a municipal election campaign in Vila Verde.
Separately, the Assembly approved the lifting of immunity for Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP) deputy Filipe Sousa. The Public Ministry alleges that while serving as the Mayor of Santa Cruz, Sousa received an undue patrimonial advantage when a car rental company allegedly failed to charge him 1,618.96 euros for a 28-day rental due to his official position. Sousa has denied the allegations, describing the investigation as “political persecution” and a “narrative without foundation.”
