Portuguese Parliament honors musician Jorge Palma

The Portuguese Parliament unanimously approved a vote of condolence following the death of musician Jorge Palma. The motion, proposed by the President of the Assembly of the Republic, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, noted that Palma’s legacy “will continue to inspire several generations.”

During the session, deputies observed a minute of silence and a round of applause in honor of the Lisbon-born pianist, guitarist, songwriter, and singer. The official text highlighted his musical journey, which included influences from rock'n'roll and folk, and his mentorship under Ary dos Santos.

The tribute also touched upon his personal history, noting his exile to Denmark in 1973 to avoid mandatory military service and his subsequent return to Portugal in the summer of 1974. The motion recognized his significant contributions as an orchestrator, instrumentalist, and performer who worked alongside many prominent national figures.
