Portuguese police investigate vandalism at Rossio statue in Lisbon

The Judiciary Police (Polícia Judiciária) are conducting investigations at Praça do Rossio in Lisbon regarding damage to the statue of D. Pedro IV. Experts are assessing paintings, graffiti, and other damages to the cultural heritage site, following similar incidents during protests in October.

The investigation coincides with a court ruling that supports housing activists, stating that protesters may exercise their rights beyond 00:30, a decision that contradicts previous stances held by the government and the Public Security Police (PSP).

Controversy has also emerged regarding the costs of cleaning the area. Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moedas previously suggested that cleaning the statue cost 100,000 euros, but the Lisbon City Council clarified that this figure covered the total cleaning of the entire square and surrounding areas over several days. Court records indicate that the specific cost for graffiti removal from the statue was attributed to 800 euros.
