Portugal police probe corruption in football referee appointments
The Polícia Judiciária (PJ) opened an investigation into alleged corruption and influence‑peddling surrounding the appointment of referees for Primeira Liga matches. The probe stems from a 20‑page complaint that includes WhatsApp messages, screenshots, phone calls, audio and video recordings documenting how the assignments for the Moreirense vs Estrela da Amadora and Estrela da Amadora vs Famalicão fixtures were allegedly known before their official release. The dossier prompted PJ to examine possible leaks of information and contacts between arbitration officials and federation directors.
Duarte Gomes, the former national technical director of arbitration at the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), resigned after raising the issue. The FPF’s Council of Justice subsequently archived the disciplinary inquiry into Luciano Gonçalves for lack of sufficient evidence. Witnesses heard during the investigation include referees Hélder Malheiro and Fábio Veríssimo, as well as officials Luciano Gonçalves and Duarte Gomes. No proof was found that Gonçalves disclosed referee appointments early or attempted to influence match results.
