Portuguese political tensions rise over Social Security and censure motion

The Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) has accused the government of launching an attack on public Social Security to benefit banks and insurance companies. During a press conference in Lisbon, PCP leader Fernanda Mateus claimed that the PSD/CDS government, with support from the European Commission, Chega, and Iniciativa Liberal, is working to discredit the public pension system despite positive Social Security balances.

Simultaneously, political tensions are rising as the Chega party prepares a motion of censure against the government. This move is centered on controversies involving the Minister of Internal Administration, Luís Neves. Hugo Soares, the Secretary-General of the PSD, dismissed the motion as ‘ridiculous,’ arguing that Chega is attempting to topple the government and trigger elections before the results of ongoing inquiries into the minister are known.
