Chega party submits motion of censure against Portuguese government
The Chega party has officially submitted a motion of censure to the Portuguese Parliament against the government led by Prime Minister Luís Montenegro. The move follows intense political pressure regarding the conduct of Minister of Internal Administration Luís Neves.
André Ventura, leader of Chega, cited evident suspicions surrounding Neves, including the use of a vehicle seized by the Judiciary Police and links to a company involved in a drug trafficking investigation. Ventura stated that there are no conditions justifying Neves' continued presence in office, describing the situation as a degradation of democratic institutions.
Luís Neves has denied the allegations, characterizing them as defamation and insinuations. He maintained that he has the authority to govern and will not be intimidated by political pressure. Meanwhile, José Luís Carneiro of the PS party warned that the controversy is weakening the political authority of the State and the Prime Minister.
Reports indicate that President António José Seguro may have given Prime Minister Montenegro a 20-day deadline to replace the minister to resolve the institutional crisis.
