Portuguese prisons in Odemira and Guarda cease housing women
The prisons in Odemira and Guarda have ceased to house female inmates as part of a service reorganization plan by the Directorate-General for Administration of Justice.
Female inmates from the southern region of Portugal will now be transferred to the Tires Prison in Greater Lisbon, while those from the central interior region will be sent to the Santa Cruz do Bispo Female Prison in Greater Porto. The distance for southern inmates to Tires is approximately 220 kilometers, while central inmates traveling to Santa Cruz do Bispo will cover about 215 kilometers.
The Directorate-General for Reintegration and Prison Services (DGRSP) confirmed that all inmates have already been transferred. For women currently in transit or undergoing legal proceedings in the south, a section will be maintained at the Olhão Prison, and Guarda will retain a female room for those in transit within that region.
