Portuguese river projects spark environmental controversy

The Associação Alambi released a report on the Alenquer River, highlighting its rich biodiversity, including native fish, otters and waterbirds. It noted that a 2025 municipal intervention to control river‑bed vegetation preserved fish habitats but destroyed bird nesting zones.

A separate intervention on a 300‑metre stretch of the Ribeira de Alcolobre, which marks the boundary between Abrantes and Constância, removed most vegetation and reinforced flood protection works without prior public notice. Local mayors Manuel Jorge Valamatos (Abrantes) and Sérgio Oliveira (Constância) said they were unaware of the project and have asked the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) for clarification. The work has divided public opinion, with concerns over landscape alteration and ecological impact versus potential hydraulic benefits.
